Written and directed by Pedro Almadover, the main character is a blind writer, Harry Caine (Lluis Homar), who is assisted by his agent Judit (Blanca Portillo) and her son, Diego (Tamar Novas). Upon hearing the news of the death of a prominent tycoon, Ernesto (Jose Luis Gomez), coupled with a visit from a director, Ray X (Ruben Ochandiano) evokes memories of his past as a film director when he was known by his real name, Mateo Blanco and the circumstances that resulted in his decision to live his life under his pseudonym, the link provided by a picture of Lena (Penelope Cruz) This was a well constructed story. There are revelations that emerge ,as the story progresses, which while not earth-shattering, didn’t have any adverse effect, which was a good thing because adding a twist at the end would have ruined the film. It’s a story of power, jealousy, passion and the value of friendship and loyalty. There were solid enough performances, no difference in the effects and lighting used for the past and present, which was helped by the fact that each event is prefaced by a dateline caption. For a film in the native tongue, using English subtitles, it was easy to follow and enjoyable. Despite laden with dialogue, it still remained cinematically palatable. © K. Payne (2009)
