SOMETHING NEW FOR THE FUTURE PARADOX A catastrophe which affects the whole world is a theme which has been used in one way or another in many TV programmes and films. When I saw the first instalment of ‘Flash Forward’ an American series being shown on channel 5, I thought it was different, mysterious and exciting. The story is based on Robert Sawyers novel of the same name in which the start up of the large Hadron Collider causes the earth’s population to black out for two minutes when they experience visions of their personal futures twenty one years hence. The weekly episodes of ‘Flash Forward’ continue to describe how when blacked out different people who have seen visions of what is going to happen to them six months hence deal with these revelations. In a new five part series called ‘Paradox’ which starts on BBC 1 on Tuesday the 24th November at 9pm what might happen in the future is again used as the basic idea of the drama. Reports are received of images of a crime or a disaster allegedly transmitted from space which are about to happen in the future. As in ‘Flash Forward’ the main characters are given the task of avoiding the forecast cataclysmic event. Tanzin Outhwaite is the Detective Inspector chosen to lead the investigation involved in a race against time to prevent any deaths. To add gravity to the situation whether the disasters should be stopped or allowed to happen gives rise to moral issues. I would not pay too much attention to the crystal ball idea in both programmes just enjoy the action scenes and Tanzin’s performance By Aubrey Seller 23/11/09
